Dolphin® FIS® Therapy Mattress, 42-inch
The 42-inch surface is 42 inches wide by 82 inches long by 10 inches deep — 107 by 208 by 25 cm — and Joerns rates it at 500 lb, the same as the 35-inch standard mattress. Joerns’ own specification block puts both widths in the standard group at that figure. Retail listings from independent sellers describe the 42-inch as the wide surface at up to 500 lb and reserve 1,000 lb for the 48-inch. There is no Joerns document we could find stating any other capacity for this width, and we will not publish a number we cannot point to.
That 500 lb is also the mattress figure alone. Joerns footnotes every capacity in the line with the same sentence: total weight must not exceed the bed frame manufacturer’s specified load capacity. In practice the frame is usually the binding constraint, and on a 42-inch bed it is worth checking twice, because 42-inch frames are sold across a wide range of ratings and the width does not tell you the number. Send us the frame make and model with the enquiry.
The therapy is the Dolphin system as it works on every surface in the line. The AutoVector control unit — 11.5 by 12.5 by 6 inches, 10 lb — monitors the support surface more than 100 times per second for any patient movement or surface changes, in Joerns’ words, and automatically measures the specific anthropometric characteristics of the individual patient as they engage the support surface, producing an individualized immersion profile Joerns describes as creating a near neutrally buoyant state. Joerns states there is no need for direct intervention or manual entry to adjust comfort settings. That matters more on a wide surface than a narrow one: a person with a larger body shape presents a very different load map when they roll from back to side, and the system re-measures rather than holding a setting someone dialled in at delivery.
Autofirm firms the surface for transfers and care procedures and, per Joerns, returns to the previous setting after approximately 15 minutes. A quick CPR deflation valve is fitted. The cover is smooth nylon with low friction and low shear properties, breathable and moisture vapour permeable. A sealed 12 VDC rechargeable battery in the control unit gives approximately 12 hours of alternate power if the system is disconnected or the mains fail. This 10-inch standard-depth surface has no safety cell — the foam cell is a Low Profile feature and the air-filled cell a V-Matt feature, and neither belongs here.
