Cost
What a Dolphin FIS system costs to rent and to buy
The table below carries the numbers, which is where numbers belong: monthly rental bands and outright purchase bands, by configuration, in US dollars. Four configurations are quoted per order and say so rather than showing a figure somebody estimated from a sibling product.
This page is about the decision the numbers sit inside. A purchase is a five-figure capital commitment. A rental is a monthly operating cost. And for most patients the clinical need has no known end date, which is the fact that decides the question more often than the arithmetic does.
Rental rates and purchase prices
Filter by type of surface. Rental rates are per month and purchase prices are one-time, both in US dollars. Where a range is shown, the figure depends on the model and the size; we confirm it in writing before anything ships. Where it says Call for a quote, the item is priced per order and we have not published a band for it. Freight is quoted separately.
Our rates are not published yet. Every figure below is shown as $X,XXX because it is a placeholder, not a price. We are confirming each rate against current dealer pricing and will not print a number we have not stood behind. Ask for a quote and you will get the real figure in writing, with freight quoted separately.

- Two bands
- Monthly rental and outright purchase, side by side
- Quoted per order
- Four configurations, shown as "call for a quote"
- Freight
- Quoted separately, per lane and access situation
- Insurance
- We do not bill Medicare or submit claims
How to read the table
- 1
Find the configuration
Rows are surfaces, not sizes in the abstract. If you do not yet know which one fits your bed frame, start with the frame measurements rather than with the price column.
- 2
Read both columns
Rent monthly and buy outright, on the same row. A band means the figure depends on the model and size within that configuration, and we confirm the exact number in writing.
- 3
Add freight
Freight is never in the rate or the price, because a dock delivery and a fourth-floor walk-up in an extended delivery area are not the same job and one blended figure would be wrong for both.
- 4
Then decide the term
Multiply a monthly band by the months you honestly expect, and compare. If that number is guesswork — and it usually is — that is an argument for renting, not against it.
How much does a Dolphin mattress cost?
Two answers, both in the table. To rent, a monthly band per configuration. To buy, a one-time band for the configurations with a published purchase price. Where neither is published, the row says "call for a quote", which is the honest state for an item nobody has published a band for rather than an invitation to a sales call.
We do not quote prices in the prose on this site, and that is deliberate. A number typed into a sentence drifts: the table gets updated, the paragraph does not, and six months later two pages disagree about what something costs. Every figure on this site comes from one file, which the table, the request form and the structured data all read. If you see a price here, it is the price the whole site believes.
Renting versus buying, honestly
A purchase is capital. You pay once, you own an asset, and past a certain number of months it is the cheaper route by a wide margin. For a facility that will move one surface through many patients over several years, or for a patient with a long and predictable need, that is the right shape of decision, and the maths is not subtle.
A rental is an operating cost. It starts when the surface arrives, it stops when the need stops, and it converts an irreversible five-figure commitment into something a household or a unit budget can absorb month by month and end with a phone call. The cost of that flexibility is that a long rental eventually passes what buying would have cost.
The reason most people should rent first is not financial; it is clinical. The end date belongs to a wound-care nurse and a physician, not to a budget. A pressure injury closes on its own schedule. A flap either takes or it does not. A patient comes home for what everyone hopes will be six weeks and needs the surface for five months, or comes off it in three. If you cannot honestly name the month it ends, you cannot honestly do the arithmetic that would justify buying — and buying into that uncertainty is how people end up owning equipment they no longer need or, worse, the wrong size of it.
The exception is the situation where the need is structural rather than episodic: a long rehabilitation ahead, a recurring risk the care team expects to manage for years, a facility building an estate. If that is your situation, ask us for the purchase figure and we will have that conversation rather than quietly billing month twenty-three.
- Rent when the end date is unknown, which is most of the time
- Rent when the configuration might have to change with the patient
- Buy when the need is long and predictable, or the surface is an asset that will be reused
- Buy when a capital budget exists and an open-ended operating line does not
- Either way, ask for both figures — they are on the same row of the table
What is not in the price
A bed frame. A Dolphin FIS system is a therapy surface and its control unit, and it lies on a frame you already have. If there is no suitable frame in the house, that is a separate cost from a separate supplier, and it is often the part a covered benefit will pay for even though this surface is not.
Freight. It is quoted per shipment and shown as its own line, because lane and access change it more than distance does: residential or commercial, dock or doorway, lift-gate, inside delivery, which floor, and whether the ZIP code sits in an extended delivery area. Alaska and Hawai‘i are quoted on their own terms, and Hawai‘i usually carries a second leg beyond O‘ahu.
And anything a clinician has to do. Assessment, prescription, documentation and, where an HSA or FSA is involved, a Letter of Medical Necessity are your care team’s, not ours to provide or to charge for.
Comparing our price with what you have seen elsewhere
Check which product a listing is for before you compare. A complete system — surface plus AutoVector® control unit — and a replacement surface alone are both sold online, and they are priced several times apart. A replacement surface requires a working control unit to operate and comes without hoses or a bed frame. Most of the low prices people bring us turn out to be for the surface alone.
For what it is worth as context: two national online retailers listed a complete Dolphin FIS system on 17 September 2026 at a figure materially above the purchase band published in the table below. That is an observation of two other companies’ listings on one day, not a claim about the market and not a promise about tomorrow. Joerns publishes no list price, so there is no manufacturer figure for anyone to measure against, and you will not find us claiming to be cheapest anywhere.
Who pays, and what that changes
Nothing here is billed to an insurer. We do not bill Medicare, Medicaid or commercial plans and we do not submit claims. Fluid immersion simulation has no HCPCS code of its own and a Dolphin FIS is not an air-fluidized bed, so there is no clean benefit to apply against these figures. If a covered Group 2 surface would meet the clinical need, that is a cheaper answer than any row in this table, and the insurance section explains how to pursue it.
Two funding routes do change the picture. An HSA or FSA claim, supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity from your clinician, is a conversation with your plan administrator — often the right one for a therapy surface prescribed for a diagnosed condition, and always their decision rather than ours. And institutional buyers work from a purchase order through their own procurement or VA contracting process, in which case the figure you need from us is a quote in your format rather than a band on a page.
What changes a quote
- The configuration: width, length and depth
- Rental or purchase, and the expected term if renting
- Whether you already own an AutoVector® control unit
- The destination ZIP code and whether it is an extended delivery area
- Residential or commercial, dock or doorway, and which floor
- Whether a lift-gate or inside delivery is required
- Offshore destinations, and which island for Hawai‘i
- Quantity, for facility and multi-site orders
