How this works
How we get a Dolphin system to you and take it back
Four pages sit under this one, and between them they answer the four questions people actually ask before they commit: can I rent it rather than buy it, what does buying involve, how fast can it get here, and will it fit the bed I already have.
The short version of all four is that this is a freight business wrapped around a clinical product. The surface is light — Joerns lists the therapy mattress at 22 lb and the AutoVector® control unit at 10 lb — and everything difficult about getting it to you happens in the last fifty feet and in the measurements nobody took beforehand.

Where we ship
Surfaces move by common carrier to all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Transit time depends on the lane and the carrier’s schedule, so ask the order desk to confirm both before you commit to a discharge date.

Alaska and Hawaii move on a different lane and are quoted separately. Dock, lift-gate and inside-delivery needs change the freight quote, so tell us how the surface has to get through the door.
- Two transactions
- Rent by the month, or buy outright
- Coverage
- All fifty states, with Alaska and Hawai‘i on their own lanes
- Setup
- Carried in, fitted to the frame, checked and handed over
- At the end
- We collect; cleaning and inspection happen on our side
The whole sequence, start to finish
- 1
Specify
The configuration a clinician named, or the requirement it has to meet, plus the bed frame it will sit on and the patient’s weight.
- 2
Fit check
Width, length and depth against the frame’s deck, and both capacity figures. Joerns is explicit that a surface leaving gaps at the panels or rails is not to be used.
- 3
Quote in writing
Rental rate or purchase price, freight quoted separately, and the terms. Nothing ships on a verbal understanding.
- 4
Freight and setup
Carried into the room, laid on the frame, control unit sited and plugged in, system powered up and checked, and a handover for whoever is caring.
- 5
In service
Month by month for a rental. If the patient, the frame or the room changes, the configuration can usually change with it.
- 6
Collection
One call ends it. We collect the surface and the control unit, and the cleaning and inspection are our job, not yours.
Which of the four pages you need
If the question is whether this can be a monthly cost rather than a purchase, start with the rental program: it sets out what a rental includes, why the term is open-ended, and what the room has to provide. If the need is long-term and you are weighing ownership, the purchase page covers what a complete system actually is, how it differs from a replacement surface, and how institutional and private purchases are paid for.
If you are working against a date, the emergency and overnight dispatch page explains what we can genuinely influence and what belongs to the carrier — and why you will get a realistic receipt date in writing rather than a promise. And if the question is whether the surface will fit the bed, the white-glove page is the one: it carries the sizes, the entrapment gap rule, what setup covers, and an honest account of how surfaces are cleaned between deployments.
- Nationwide rental program — term, inclusions, and what the room needs
- Buying outright — systems versus replacement surfaces, warranty, and how purchases are paid
- Emergency and overnight dispatch — the mechanism, and why there is no clock on it
- White-glove setup and sanitized removal — fit, the gap rule, setup and collection
The three things that decide whether a delivery goes well
The frame, first and every time. Dolphin surfaces come in fixed sizes — 35, 42 and 48 inch widths, 82 inch lengths with an 88 inch step-deck version and an expandable model rated 80 to 92 inches, 8 or 10 inch depths — and Joerns states the equipment is not to be used on a frame that leaves gaps of even a few inches at the head panel, foot panel or rails. A measurement taken before the order is worth more than any amount of goodwill afterwards.
The route in, second. An 82-inch surface is light but long, and the constraint is rarely the front door; it is the turn at the top of the stairs, the elevator that has to be booked, the building that wants a certificate of insurance filed in advance. Tell us about those and they become scheduling; discover them on the day and they become a failed delivery.
The room, third. The control unit needs an outlet nobody else competes for, and Joerns rates the system to operate between 50 °F and 95 °F at 30% to 75% relative humidity, non-condensing, with an IPX2 enclosure. That is a sentence about unheated sunrooms, garage conversions and porches, and it is why deliveries here are scheduled handovers rather than doorstep drops.
What we will not promise
No delivery-time guarantee. We do not control the carrier network, the weather on your lane or a building’s receiving rules, and a promise that ignores those is a promise made to be broken against somebody’s discharge date. What you get instead is the earliest date the carrier will commit to, in writing, with a plain statement of what could still move it.
No named sanitization standard. Surfaces are cleaned and inspected between deployments following the cleaning instructions in the Joerns user-service manual. We hold no certification or numbered reprocessing protocol and will not imply one.
And no coverage promise. We do not bill Medicare or submit insurance claims; fluid immersion simulation has no HCPCS code of its own. The insurance section explains how the categories actually work and what to ask, which is more useful than anything we could pretend about them.
What we need from you, whichever route you take
- The configuration, or the clinical requirement it must meet
- Bed frame make and model, or measured deck width and length
- The frame’s rated load capacity, and the patient’s approximate weight
- The full delivery address, including floor, entrance or dock
- Access constraints: stairs, elevators, insurance certificates, receiving hours
- Whether you are renting or buying, and who is paying
- The date it is needed, and what that date depends on
- Who will be there to receive it and take the handover
Questions people ask us
Do you rent, sell, or both?
Do you deliver everywhere in the United States?
Is setup included, or is it dropped at the door?
How is the surface cleaned between patients?
What happens when we no longer need it?
Start with the frame and the date
Send us what the bed frame measures and when the surface is needed. We will confirm what fits, what it costs to rent or to buy, and the earliest realistic date it can be there.
