Outright purchase

Buying a Dolphin FIS system outright

Some needs do not end. A spinal cord injury with years of rehabilitation ahead, a facility that will move one surface through many patients, a family who has already rented for most of a year and has done the arithmetic. For those, owning the equipment is the cheaper and simpler answer, and we sell the same Dolphin® FIS® configurations we rent.

A purchase is a five-figure decision, so this page is about what you actually get for it, what is easy to buy by mistake, and how people pay. Prices sit in the table on the pricing page, where they can be seen against the rental bands rather than quoted at you in a paragraph.

How a purchase runs

  1. 1

    Specify the configuration

Width, length and depth are set by the bed frame and the patient, not by preference. We confirm the fit against the frame you have before anything is quoted.

  2. 2

    Written quote

The price of the system, the freight to your address and anything else chargeable, itemized. For facilities and VA procurement, in the format your contracting process needs.

  3. 3

    Payment and order

Private purchases are paid directly. Facility and VA purchases run on a purchase order through your own procurement process, on your timetable rather than ours.

  4. 4

    Delivery and setup

Freight to the address, carried in, placed on the frame, connected and checked, with a handover for whoever will be using it.

  5. 5

    After it is yours

You hold the Joerns warranty on the mattress and the control unit. We remain the point of contact for parts, questions and anything that needs to go back to the manufacturer.

A complete system is not a replacement surface

This is the single most expensive mistake available on this product, so it goes first. A Dolphin FIS system is two things: the therapy surface and the AutoVector® control unit that drives it. The surface on its own does nothing. Retailers also list the surface alone, as a replacement for an owner who already has a working control unit, and those listings are priced accordingly — far lower than a system, because they are not one.

If you are comparing prices you found elsewhere against ours, check which of the two you are looking at. A replacement-surface listing states that a control unit is required to operate it and that hoses and the bed frame are not included. We will tell you which you are being quoted, every time, and we will not quote you a surface alone unless you already own a control unit and say so.

What buying gets you that renting does not

Ownership converts an open-ended monthly cost into a one-time capital cost with a known number attached. For a facility, that is the difference between a line in the operating budget that never closes and an asset on the books that can be moved between rooms, between patients and between units without a phone call. For a family, it is the end of watching a bill arrive for equipment nobody can say when they will stop needing.

You also get the Joerns warranty in your own name: two years on the mattress and two years on the control unit, as Joerns publishes it. And you get the freedom to keep the surface after the acute episode ends, which matters for conditions that recur. A pressure injury that has healed once is a pressure injury that the care team will watch for.

What you give up is reversibility. If the need ends in eight weeks, you own a therapy surface. If the patient’s weight or frame changes such that a different width is required, you own the wrong width. That is the honest case for renting, and it is why the rental page exists rather than being a footnote here.

How purchases are actually paid for

Families pay privately. There is no route through Medicare for this product — fluid immersion simulation has no HCPCS code of its own, a Dolphin FIS is not an air-fluidized bed, and we do not bill Medicare or submit claims to any insurer. We say this before the quote rather than after it.

Facilities and VA health networks buy on their own paper. A purchase order through your procurement or contracting process is the normal route, and the process belongs to you: we provide the quote, the specification and the documentation your buyer asks for, in whatever format that is. We hold no federal contract vehicle or schedule that we can point you at, and if your station requires one, tell us early and we will say plainly whether we can meet it.

For private buyers, an HSA or FSA is worth raising with your plan administrator. A mattress is a dual-purpose item, so it is not on any pre-approved list on its own; what changes that is a Letter of Medical Necessity from your clinician tying the item to a diagnosed condition. Your plan administrator decides, applying IRS rules to your claim. We can supply an itemized receipt showing the item, the date, the amount and a description suited to substantiation. We cannot write, supply or pre-fill the letter — that is your clinician’s document, and a seller-written medical necessity letter is worth nothing to an administrator anyway.

  • Private payment by the family or the patient
  • A facility purchase order through your own procurement process
  • VA health network purchasing through VA contracting channels
  • HSA or FSA reimbursement, subject to a clinician’s Letter of Medical Necessity and your plan administrator’s decision

Where our price sits against the market

Two national online retailers listed a complete Dolphin FIS system on 17 September 2026 at a figure materially above the purchase band published on our pricing page. That is an observation of two other companies’ listings on one day, not a permanent market fact and not a claim about what anyone else will charge you tomorrow. Joerns does not publish a list price, so there is no manufacturer figure for anyone to compare against.

We would rather state it that way than write "lowest price anywhere", which nobody can verify and which would be the first sentence on this site you could not trace to a source. Check the retailers yourself if the comparison matters to you. What we can commit to is that the band on the pricing page is what we work from, that freight is quoted separately rather than buried, and that the quote you get is in writing before you spend anything.

Before you commit

Two questions decide whether this purchase is right, and neither is about price. The first is clinical: is this the surface the care team wants, or is it the surface someone found online? If a covered Group 2 surface would meet the need, it is cheaper, it is coded, and a DME supplier can bill it. We will say so.

The second is physical: does it fit? Joerns is explicit that the equipment is not to be used on a frame that leaves gaps of even a few inches between the surface and the head panel, foot panel or rails, because of the entrapment risk that creates. Buying the wrong width is not a preference problem; it is a surface that should not be used. Measure first, and let us check the measurement against the configuration before you buy.

What a purchase quote needs from you

  • The configuration, or the clinical requirement it has to meet
  • The bed frame’s make and model, or its measured width and length
  • The frame’s rated load capacity, since the mattress figure is not the whole limit
  • The patient’s approximate weight
  • The delivery address, the floor, and how a delivery reaches the room
  • Whether you already own an AutoVector® control unit
  • Whether this is a private purchase, a facility purchase order or a VA procurement
  • Your procurement contact and the documentation format they need, for institutional buyers

Questions people ask us

What is included when I buy a system?
The Dolphin FIS therapy surface in the configuration you specify, the AutoVector control unit that drives it, and the hoses and power lead that connect them. A bed frame is not included: the surface goes on a frame you already have.
Why are some Dolphin prices online so much lower?
Because they are usually for the replacement surface alone, not a complete system. A replacement surface requires a working AutoVector control unit to operate and does not include hoses or a bed frame. Always check which of the two a listing is for.
What warranty comes with it?
Joerns publishes a two-year warranty on the mattress and a two-year warranty on the control unit. We are an authorized Joerns dealer, not Joerns Healthcare, and the manufacturer’s warranty terms are the manufacturer’s.
Do you offer financing or a payment plan?
We are not a lender and do not offer a credit product. If paying outright is not possible, renting monthly while the need is live is the real alternative, and the purchase conversation can be revisited if the need turns out to be long-term.
Can I use an HSA or FSA to buy one?
Often, with a Letter of Medical Necessity from your clinician — a mattress is a dual-purpose item, so it is not eligible on its own. Your plan administrator decides, not us. We can provide an itemized receipt suited to substantiation, but we cannot write or supply the letter.
Is buying cheaper than renting?
Only past a crossover point that depends on the configuration and the number of months. Both bands are on the pricing page so you can do that arithmetic with real numbers. If the need is likely to be measured in weeks, renting is almost always the better decision.
Can a facility buy several and have them delivered to different sites?
Yes. Tell us the sites and the receiving arrangements at each, because dock access, inside delivery and whether biomedical engineering wants to receive the units all change the freight and the schedule. Each site is quoted on its own lane.
