Dolphin® Fluid Immersion Simulation® Wheelchair Cushion
The cushion is 17 inches wide by 17 inches long by 4 inches deep — 43 by 43 by 10 cm — and weighs 5 lb. Joerns gives its maximum safe working load as 250 lb. That is the lowest rating in the Dolphin range by a wide margin, and it rules the cushion out for a great many people who could use the mattress; there is no larger version of it in the specifications we work from, so if the person is above 250 lb we will tell you this is not available to them rather than quote around it.
Seventeen by seventeen is a seat size, not a universal fitting. A wheelchair seat is specified by width and depth and neither is standard across chairs; a cushion that is too wide will not drop into the seat pan, and one that is too narrow leaves the thighs unsupported at the edges. Measure the chair’s seat, not the person, and send us both figures. If a seating therapist has already specified a cushion size, that specification governs.
The therapy principle is the Dolphin principle applied to a seated load. Joerns describes fluid immersion simulation as automatically simulating a fluid environment, maintaining near normal blood flow, minimizing soft tissue distortion and optimizing tissue oxygenation, and describes the system as automatically measuring the specific anthropometric characteristics of the individual patient as they engage the support surface. Seated loading concentrates weight over a much smaller area than lying does, which is why the seated surface is a distinct product rather than a piece cut from a mattress.
One thing we will not do on this page is describe how the cushion connects and what drives it as though we had the figures. Joerns documents the cushion in the same user-service manual as the mattress and the AutoVector control unit, with the same system specifications, but whether a control unit you already own will drive a cushion is a question about your specific unit, and we confirm it against that unit before an order goes out rather than assuming it.
