Dolphin® FIS® Bariatric Therapy Mattress, 48-inch
The bariatric surface measures 48 inches wide by 82 inches long by 10 inches deep — 122 by 208 by 25 cm. Joerns’ specification sheet lists it in its own block, separate from the standard widths, with a weight limit of 1,000 lb, and Joerns’ user-service manual states the therapy mattress maximum safe working load as 1,000 lb (454.5 kg). Joerns’ product page phrases the range across the line as a weight capacity of 500 to 1,000 lb depending on configuration. This is the configuration at the top of that range.
Capacity is where the honest conversation about a bariatric order starts and it is never only about the mattress. Joerns’ footnote is that total weight must not exceed the bed frame manufacturer’s specified load capacity, and when paired with an appropriate surface. Bariatric frames are published with two numbers — a patient limit and a total limit including the mattress and accessories — and the patient number is the one to compare against the person’s charted weight. We ask for the frame’s make, model and both ratings before quoting, and if the frame is the lower number we will tell you that the frame, not the surface, is what limits the setup.
The therapy runs the same way it does on every Dolphin surface, which is the point of choosing this line at bariatric size. The AutoVector control unit is 11.5 by 12.5 by 6 inches and weighs 10 lb regardless of the surface it drives. Joerns states that the module monitors the support surface more than 100 times per second for any patient movement or surface changes, that the system automatically measures the specific anthropometric characteristics of the individual patient as they engage the support surface, and that it produces an individualized immersion profile creating a near neutrally buoyant state. There is, in Joerns’ words, no need for direct intervention or manual entry to adjust comfort settings. On a larger person whose weight redistributes substantially when they roll, an automatic surface that re-measures is doing more work than a manually set one.
Autofirm is available for transfers and care procedures and returns to the previous setting after approximately 15 minutes. A quick CPR deflation valve is fitted. The cover is smooth nylon with low friction and low shear properties, breathable and moisture vapour permeable, allowing air to circulate beneath the pad and wicking moisture away. Battery backup is the same sealed 12 VDC rechargeable unit at approximately 12 hours. There is no safety cell on this configuration: Joerns documents the foam cell for Low Profile models only and the air-filled cell for V-Matt models only, and we do not extend either to the bariatric surface.
