Delivering to Mountain West & High Plains
Dolphin FIS Therapy Surfaces in the Mountain West and High Plains
Ten states, a quarter of the country’s land area, and a freight network built for the four metros where most of the people are. Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas have terminal coverage as good as anywhere. Outside them, a great many ZIP codes in this region sit in what carriers classify as an extended delivery area: served through a partner carrier or an agent on the final leg, reached on scheduled days rather than on request, and quoted with an accessorial charge that a metro address never sees.
That is the whole shape of this page. We are not going to tell you this is fast, because on a Wyoming or eastern Montana address it is not, and a supplier who implies otherwise is setting up a family for a bad week. What we can do is tell you accurately, before you commit, what the lane actually looks like for your address — including when the truthful answer is that the truck comes Tuesdays. Coming home from
-
A critical access hospital
The federal designation for a small rural hospital of 25 inpatient beds or fewer. Across much of this region one of them is the only hospital for an enormous area. They stabilise and transfer rather than treat complex wounds on site, so a discharge often follows a transfer somewhere else entirely.
-
A tertiary referral hospital in a regional metro
Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Albuquerque and Billings draw patients from hundreds of miles out. The home a person is discharged to may be in a different state from the hospital that treated them.
-
A private home in a frontier county
Hours from an emergency department, often on a county road, sometimes on a well and a propane tank. What is different here is not the house, it is how far away every form of help is.
-
A home on tribal land
Addressing is frequently a route and box rather than a street number, and national carriers vary in what they will deliver to. This is a conversation to have before booking, not at the point of dispatch.
-
A skilled nursing facility or long-term care community
Usually in the county seat, and usually the only one for a wide area, which makes its receiving schedule the practical schedule for a large radius around it.
Going home to Mountain West & High Plains
The sequence that catches people out here is the transfer. Someone is admitted to a critical access hospital close to home, transferred to a referral center in a metro two or three hundred miles away, treated there, and then discharged — to the original address. The discharge planner is working in the metro; the delivery is going to a county the metro carrier network reaches on a limited-service basis. If you tell us the home address early, we can work the lead time backwards from it. If we first hear the address on the day the discharge is confirmed, we are compressing a schedule that does not compress.
What we will confirm for you before anything ships: whether the destination ZIP is inside a carrier’s standard service area or an extended one, what the delivery days are if it is extended, and what has to be true at the address for the final leg to complete — whether a tractor-trailer can reach it and turn, whether a liftgate is needed, whether there is a gate or a cattle guard, and who will be there. Every one of those is answerable in advance and none of them is answerable by a national promise. We describe the mechanism and the constraint rather than publishing a delivery clock; on this region’s lanes a published clock would be the least honest thing on the site.
Homes here, and what fits in them
The buildings themselves are rarely the problem. Ranch houses and newer Front Range and Wasatch construction have level entries and generous interior doors, and a 22 lb mattress with a 10 lb control unit is not a heavy carry. The obstacles here are outside the house: a mile of gravel that softens after a storm, a cattle guard, a bridge with a posted weight limit, a yard where a 53-foot trailer has nowhere to turn around, and mountain roads that close by season or under a chain law rather than by the hour. In winter, an address reached over a pass is an address whose lead time is written by the Department of Transportation.
Elevation comes up here and almost nowhere else, and the answer is genuinely reassuring but worth stating precisely rather than loosely. Joerns gives the system’s operating atmospheric pressure range as 700 to 1060 hPa. In a standard atmosphere the lower end of that corresponds to roughly ten thousand feet, which puts Denver, Santa Fe, Flagstaff, Jackson and Park City comfortably inside it with room to spare. At the handful of Colorado towns that sit above ten thousand feet, you are at the edge of the published figure rather than inside it, and that is a question worth putting to us with the actual elevation rather than assuming either way. We would rather check than guess on a lane where a wrong answer takes a week to correct.

Standard Dolphin FIS Mattress
On a lane where a correction means waiting for the next scheduled delivery day rather than the next afternoon, getting the width right first time is worth more than it is anywhere else. The 35-inch surface matches the deck most homecare frames out here already have.

Low-Profile Dolphin FIS System
Eight inches instead of ten, so the transfer height is lower. In frontier counties a single family carer is often managing transfers alone, with the nearest home health agency and the nearest emergency department both a long drive away.

Extra-Wide Bariatric Dolphin FIS Mattress
The 48-inch, 1,000 lb-rated surface has to sit on a bariatric frame with its own rated load, and a matching frame is not something you source down the road in a county of four thousand people. Surface and frame get planned together here or not at all.

Pediatric & Crib Dolphin FIS Systems
Pediatric tertiary care in this region sits in a handful of metros, and families drive hours home afterwards to counties with no pediatric services at all. The pediatric and crib surfaces are also the smallest freight we ship, which matters on a long final leg.

Discharge coming up
Coming home from hospital in the next day or two?
Send us a note with the discharge date and the surface the care team has recommended, whether the patient is leaving a hospital, a rehabilitation facility, a skilled nursing facility or hospice care. What can arrive in time depends on stock, the freight lane and the hour you call, so the earlier the better.
