Dolphin FIS Therapy Surfaces in Texas and the South Central States
There is a specification on the Dolphin FIS system that matters more in these six states than anywhere else on our map. Joerns rates the system to operate at an ambient 50 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and to be stored and shipped at 50 to 104. Those are not large numbers by Gulf-coast standards. The inside of a closed trailer sitting on a yard in Houston in July runs well above the outside air, an unshaded porch in the afternoon does the same, and an uninsulated attached garage in the Metroplex is not a storage environment the manufacturer contemplates.
The consequence is simple and it is the thing this page exists to say: a receipt here is scheduled to a person, on a specific part of a specific day, and not dropped at a door. That is a slower promise than "we will get it there", and it is the correct one. It is also worth knowing that the last figure in that pair is often quoted wrong. Fifty to 104 is the storage and shipping range in the current Joerns manual; the operating range is 50 to 95. We publish the operating figure as the operating figure. Dolphin FIS and Fluid Immersion Simulation are registered trademarks of Joerns Healthcare LLC; we are an authorized dealer and we are not Joerns.
Coming home from
-
A large metropolitan medical center
Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Oklahoma City concentrate the region’s tertiary care, and patients are routinely discharged home to an address several hours’ drive from the hospital that treated them.
-
A private home on a concrete slab
The easiest delivery geometry there is — level entry, wide halls, no basement — with the receiving point often an attached garage that is the hottest room in the house.
-
A rural or critical access hospital
Across West Texas, the Panhandle, western Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska the nearest acute hospital can be an hour or more away, and the discharge address is often well off the interstate.
-
A skilled nursing or long-term care facility
Dock receiving and a scheduled window, which is the one receiving environment in this region where afternoon heat is somebody else’s managed problem rather than yours.
-
A hospice or home hospice setting
Short timelines and a strong regional preference for care at home. Setup is arranged around the family, which here usually also means arranged around the cooler end of the day.
Going home to Texas & South Central
Scale is the other thing that distinguishes this region, and Texas alone makes the point: El Paso is closer to San Diego than it is to Houston, and the state spans two time zones. A single state page for Texas would be a lie about freight, because a delivery into the Rio Grande Valley and a delivery into the Panhandle have almost nothing in common. What they do have in common is that a long final leg means a pallet spends more of the day on a truck, and in summer that is not a neutral fact. When we plan a receipt here we are planning around how long the equipment sits before it is indoors.
The practical version, for a family: give us a person, a phone contact and a part of the day when someone will definitely be at the address, and prefer the morning if the choice is yours. For a facility: give us the dock hours. For a home with a gate code, a long caliche drive or an address a 53-foot trailer cannot turn around at, tell us before the system ships rather than after, because the fix is a different piece of equipment on the delivery end and not a faster driver. We will describe the mechanism honestly and we will not put a delivery clock on this page that the owner has not committed to in writing.
Homes here, and what fits in them
Housing here is overwhelmingly single-storey and slab-built, and that makes almost everything easier. There is no basement stair, the entry is usually level or one step, and newer construction across the Sun Belt has interior doors wide enough that the 35-inch standard surface is a non-event. Primary bedrooms in homes built in the last three decades are often large enough to put a hospital frame in the middle of the room with working space on both sides, which is the arrangement a carer actually needs and which is frequently impossible in an older or denser part of the country. Where it gets harder is the older stock in east Texas, Louisiana and south Arkansas — pier-and-beam houses with a front step, narrow interior doors and a hall turn.
The climate consideration splits in two, and both halves are about the same rated range. In transit, the risk is the storage and shipping ceiling of 104 degrees. Once the system is running, the risk is the operating ceiling of 95, which a bedroom in this region reaches only if the air conditioning stops. That is worth a sentence in the plan: an extended summer outage here is not simply uncomfortable, it takes the room outside the ambient conditions the manufacturer states for operation, on top of the battery question. Louisiana and the Texas coast additionally sit inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and the continuity thinking on our Southeast page applies to them in full.
Most requested in Texas & South Central
Standard Dolphin FIS Mattress
Most home setups here go into a single-storey slab house where a standard 35-inch homecare deck is already in the room, and matching the surface to the deck is what closes the gaps Joerns warns about at the head, foot and rails.
$X,XXX–$Y,YYY/mo
Wide 42-Inch Dolphin FIS Mattress
The 42-inch surface is asked for here more than anywhere, often in the belief that wider means higher-rated. It does not: Joerns rates it at the same 500 lb as the 35-inch. It is seven inches more room across, which is a real benefit on its own terms.
$X,XXX–$Y,YYY/mo
Extra-Wide Bariatric Dolphin FIS Mattress
The only Dolphin configuration rated to 1,000 lb, and it needs a matching bariatric frame with its own rated load. On a lane this long, a frame mismatch found on arrival costs a return leg of several hundred miles, so the measurements happen first.
$X,XXX–$Y,YYY/mo
Dolphin Wheelchair & Stretcher Seating Pads
Rural patients in this region spend real hours seated — in a chair at home and in a vehicle getting to an appointment two counties away. The seating and stretcher pads cover the part of the day the bed does not.

Discharge coming up
Coming home from hospital in the next day or two?
Send us a note with the discharge date and the surface the care team has recommended, whether the patient is leaving a hospital, a rehabilitation facility, a skilled nursing facility or hospice care. What can arrive in time depends on stock, the freight lane and the hour you call, so the earlier the better.
